New York City in a Weekend

With our busy schedules, it isn’t often that my husband and I get to spend any time together, let alone take a vacation together. In fact, we hadn’t taken a vacation by ourselves since our first child was born ten years ago. But now that the kids are finally a little bit older, we decided to treat ourselves to some much needed time away. We didn’t want to venture far so we decided to head to New York City for a long weekend getaway. The flight itself from Michigan is under two hours, so this made it a very easy trip! There is so much to do and see in New York City! It is so easy to have a packed agenda in such an exciting place.

Nomo Soho Hotel

We decided to stay at the Nomo Soho hotel in downtown Soho. I had heard so many nice things about this hotel that we decided to book our stay here. Of course, I knew that the front of the hotel is an iconic place in NYC to take photos, and I can certainly see why! The arched entrance with the potted plants is a welcome sight compared to the concrete jungle that surrounds us.

Nomo Soho is located in the heart of downtown Soho, which means high end shops and restaurants are just a couple of blocks away. Of course I just had to go to stores such as Chanel, Burberry, Hermes, and Chloe. I was so glad to find the small Chloe Nile bag in store as the color I wanted was sold out online. I walked in the store and there it was front and center in the store. As soon as I saw it, I knew it was mine! This bag definitely does not disappoint.

The hotel rooms themselves are very nice and clean. I had read that the standard room is rather small (less than 250 sq feet) so we upgraded to a suite. I am very glad that we did! We had a beautiful view of the city (this photo here was actually taken outside the shower window). Our bed was comfortable (though a bit soft), and there was plenty of room for storage.

The sitting room was bright, with gorgeous views of the city visible just outside the floor to ceiling windows. We even got to see the Fourth of July fireworks from our hotel room. Overall, we really enjoyed our stay at the Nomo Soho, and I would definitely stay there again.

Ladurée New York

We had so much fun exploring the plethora of restaurants in New York City. One of the first places we went to was the famous macaron bakery – Laudree in Soho. I had always wanted to try one of their world famous macarons and when I finally had the chance they were everything I expected in a fine macaron. Laudree is not only a macaron bakery, but they also have a very lovely restaurant. We had the most divine french toast I have ever tasted (Le Pain Perdu à la Rose) with the most sublime rose-infused whipped cream ever made. I could eat that french toast every day (and it’s a good thing I can’t).

I was even able to take some home for the kids, and they devoured them soon after I took this picture!

Soho Restaurants

There are so many nice restaurants in Soho, and it is so much fun trying all the different foods. Here are the others we tried:

Nomo Soho Kitchen – This restaurant is located right inside the hotel. We had both breakfast and dinner there. The food is high quality (I had avocado french toast and my husband had an omelette) and the service was impeccable. I can see why it has a great reputation.

Aunt Jakes Wine Bar and Pasta Lab – This restaurant, located in Little Italy, had great Yelp reviews so we decided to have dinner there one night. They make all their pasta in house. The setting is quaint and inviting, which is really nice to experience in the big city. The pasta was perfect and their sauces were delicious. The manager was friendly as well. I really can’t say anything bad about this restaurant!

Grotta Azzurra – This is one of the first restaurants you will happen upon in Little Italy. Their menu is typical Italian food, and I would say it is pretty good. They have a two course dinner menu for under $20, which is an amazing price in NYC. We sat outside to eat and had a pretty fun evening just people watching. I would say this is a popular restaurant for tourists.

Grey Dog – This restaurant was another Yelp find. We wanted a good, wholesome breakfast, and Grey Dog was what we were looking for. This is an eclectic restaurant, with somewhat a rustic feel. I have to say I felt quite at home when I saw the University of Michigan welcome mat as soon as I walked inside. Their breakfast food is delicious and very affordable. The food was so good, we ended up going there twice.

Hamilton – An American Musical

There is just so much to do, we could spend a whole month in New York City and not even scratch the surface. We saw the Brooklyn Bridge, took a stroll through Central Park, and even saw Times Square. The highlight of our trip however was getting to see Hamilton. The show was nothing short of amazing! Tickets to the New York City show are sold out for years, so we did get our tickets on Stub Hub. Expect to pay at least $600 per ticket to see the show here. I have to say it was totally worth the money to experience this amazing production first hand. Lin-Manuel Miranda is nothing short of a musical genius! To explain American history through hip-hop is so innovative, and it really makes one stop and think about what life was like in the late 1700’s. Hamilton the Musical definitely gives you a new appreciation for our Founding Fathers. If you do plan on seeing it, I highly recommend listening to the  Broadway musical soundtrack before you go. It is so helpful to hear the songs and understand the words behind them before you watch the entire production in person. The music is truly epic, and it gets better and better the more you listen to it. My kids love listening to the music of Hamilton, and they haven’t even seen the show. It is so cute to hear my three year old son singing “My Shot” and counting down the “Ten Duel Commandments”.  I’ve seen quite a few musicals in my lifetime, and Hamilton is the only one that I would pay to see in person again, it is just that good!
