Fourth of July Tablescape

July 4th Tablescape Inspiration

We built our house four years ago with entertaining in mind. After living in Las Vegas for so many years, we were eager to be back in the Midwest with family, as my husband’s parents, his sister, and the kid’s cousins live nearby. We love to get together, especially around major holidays. So when we built our house, we made sure to not only have a dining room that could accommodate everyone (as in this post), but our backyard deck and patio as well. I just love entertaining friends and family, so I decided to share my patriotic tablescape that I designed this year in time for the festivities! I will also add, that I owe the inspiration for this post to my good friend Alicia of The Lush List (definitely check out her blog for fashion, recipes, and home decor inspiration!).

Fourth of July Tablescape

I love home decor just as much as I do fashion, so I really had fun creating this post! For this tablescape, I wanted of course to have a red, white, and blue color scheme. I wanted to do so in a subtle way, without all the pomp and circumstance that I could have done for a Fourth of July cookout.

The basis for the decor began with this table runner and these placemats.  The distressed blue and melon motif was exactly what I had in mind for the table. To add a pop of color, I added these bright chili pepper red napkins I picked up at World Market. The total cost for the placemats, table runner, and napkins was under $50, so this definitely did not break the bank.

The plates that I used here are from Pottery Barn. I love their melamine plate collection as they look almost identical to a traditional white ceramic dinner plate, but they weigh half as much but they are shatter-resistant and definitely durable. I chose simple white plates so that the emphasis would be on the red and blue elements in the tablescape.

The flowers I picked up from Trader Joes. I chose to do a bouquet of blue and white hydrangeas, with red alstroemerias in between them. I just love the way they look together! The vases are small mason jars that I also picked up at World Market. These vases have long been a favorite of mine for floral bouquets.

The dress I am wearing to celebrate the festivities can be found here. The subtle red stripes and the ruffled hem give this dress a fun and flirtatious look for the Fourth. I also love this dress (also found here) that looks very similar yet has sleeves.

A refreshing glass of strawberry lemonade is perfect for a hot day. I have to say this was gone quickly as my kids devoured each glass I made for them!

I just love the way the tablescape came together! We are definitely looking forward to having the family over to celebrate the festivities. I will also add that I am very thankful that our family is able to celebrate together, as it is has been obvious in the news that many migrant families don’t get this opportunity. I hope that even after the executive order was made yesterday, that Congress can get it’s act together so that this never happens again. #keepfamiliestogether.

Blueberry Cupcakes with Buttercream Frosting

And finally, I wanted to share with you my recipe for blueberry cupcakes that I made for the holiday as well. These tasty cupcakes are easy to make, and they were definitely a hit with the family!

Blueberry Cupcakes
  1. 1 and 2/3 cup (210g) all-purpose flour (I recommend measuring with a scale)
  2. 1/2 teaspoon baking powder
  3. 1/4 teaspoon baking soda
  4. 1/2 teaspoon salt
  5. 1/2 cup (115g) unsalted butter, melted
  6. 1/2 cup (100g) granulated sugar
  7. 1/2 cup (100g) packed light brown sugar
  8. 1 large egg
  9. 1/4 cup (62g) Greek yogurt
  10. 3/4 cup milk
  11. 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
  12. Zest of one lemon
  13. 1 and 1/3 cups fresh or frozen blueberries (do not thaw if using frozen)
  14. *Adapted from Sally's Baking Addiction
Vanilla Buttercream Frosting
  1. 2 lbs (908 grams) confectioners sugar
  2. 1 cup (230g) salted butter
  3. 1 cup (190g) shortening
  4. 4-6 tbsp water or milk
  5. 2 tsp vanilla extract
  6. *this is a double batch; make to ensure you have plenty of frosting
Cupcakes
  1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees Fahrenheit.
  2. Combine dry ingredients - flour, baking soda, baking powder, and salt. Set aside. Then combine melted butter, granulated sugar, and light brown sugar. Whisk in egg until mixed completely. Then add milk, vanilla extract, lemon zest and mix again. Finally gently stir in blueberries. Fold until mixed completely.
  3. Line muffin tins with 14 liners. Evenly fill the muffin liners with the batter (about 2/3 to 3/4 full, do not overfill). Bake for 20 minutes or until a toothpick inserted comes out clean. Allow to completely cool before frosting.
Frosting
  1. Combine the confectioners sugar, shortening, and butter with a stand mixer or hand mixer. Mix until thoroughly combined. Add water or milk and then vanilla. To frost I use a disposable frosting bag with my desired tip inserted at the end (I cut off the end so it can fit).

  1. I friggin’ LOVE your place settings!!! We are having a massive party – come and go kind of thing – so I am not sure a table like that would work for us but I actually really wanna try! THANK YOU for inspiring me!

  2. You are so talented and I love this post! What an amazing tablescape. Thanks for the inspiration!

  3. I love everything about this! The subtle colors are perfect, and you could probably reuse some of it again, especially those red napkins for Christmas. And that dress is gorgeous, definitely something I would wear. Plus, those cupcakes look AMAZING!

  4. Most of the people (infact everyone including me) consider 4th july as a holiday and want to enjoy some quality time with families. And eating is an important part of holidays. I really like the recipe you have shared but i doubt lazy people my like would prefer cooked food rather than cooking food for himself. But i’m pretty much sure that i’m gonna tr this recipe before 4th experience it.
