Guest Bedroom/Bathroom Makeover with Serena and Lily

For those of you who follow my blog regularly, you probably know that I love home decorating just as much as I do fashion. And when it comes to home decorating, bedrooms are some of my favorite rooms to decorate! I frequently host out of town friends and family as houseguests, and when they come to visit, I want to make sure they feel comfortable and able to relax. It can be so stressful and unnerving to stay at someone else’s house, and I want to make that process as relaxing as possible. So when Serena and Lily reached out to me about doing a guest bedroom makeover, I knew it would be the perfect opportunity to revamp our guest space to make it even more inviting. And if you see anything in today’s post that you like, keep in mind that right now Serena and Lily is having their Sleep Well event. This means that all bedding and beds are up to 30% off the regular price (no code needed) now through midnight on October 28th. So keep reading to find out my suggestion on how to make a guest bedroom/bathroom more inviting for your guests…

Start With a Light and Airy Space

I just love light and airy spaces! When you walk into a light and airy space you feel refreshed and ready to relax. Previously the guest bedroom had some darker furniture, and I swapped it out for some lighter wood pieces. With the grey walls and dark floors, the lighter furniture really balances out the space. And given the furniture and headboard are both light in color, I decided to update the duvet with this Serena and Lily Priano duvet cover. I love the soft grey botanical print, with crisp white trim. The crisp, cotton percale fabric is soft to the touch, yet it has enough structure to cover a duvet. This duvet cover is even reversible, for a darker grey color should you want to add more contrast to your room.

Add Soft and Luxurious Pillows and Sheets

You spend 8 hours of your day lying in bed. So having soft and comfortable bedsheets and pillows is of utmost importance! And making sure they are clean goes without saying. The sheets and pillowcases on this bed come from the Serena and Lily Beach Club sheet set. These sheets are made of a high-quality cotton percale material manufactured in Portugal. They are so soft and luxurious to the touch! These bright white sheets come in basic white, but you can have them trimmed in an array of colors to coordinate with your bedding. I have the fog color here, which plays nicely with the grey floral duvet cover and shams. And you can never have too many pillows! Here I have both standard and Euro pillow sizes. I also added this 14×20 pillow covered in this Leighton pillow cover, which provides plenty of lumbar support should your guest choose to read or otherwise relax on the bed. And it is always nice to add extra blankets or even a throw (such as this Serena and Lily Mila throw pictured on the bed) just in case your guests tend to get cold.

Provide the Amenities of Home

On the nightstand I made sure to have a lamp and a clock (two things I consider to be bedroom essentials). The lamp is perfect for being able to read and relax before drifting off to sleep. You could even add an iPad or other tablet for guests to use at their leisure. I make sure to print out the WiFi password so guest can gain internet access with ease. An iPad  or other tablet is even great for using an app to add white noise to listen to while sleeping. You can take it a step further by adding a charging station at the bedside table so your guest can charge his or her electronics. Having all the amenities of home can go a long way towards making your guests feel comfortable!

Add Plenty of Fresh Flowers

Nothing makes a guest bedroom more relaxing and inviting than adding fresh flowers! Not only are they visually appealing, but they are a great way to add color to a space. Here I placed fresh flowers on the bedside tray (similar here). And I made sure to add a few fresh daisies to the vases on the guest room chest. Walking into a room with fresh flowers are a sure way to make sure your guests feel welcome.

Provide Plenty of Storage Space

Guests always want to unpack their clothes and toiletries so they aren’t living out of a suitcase. Make sure you have a chest or dresser so they can store their clothes. And to take it a step further, provide a decorative basket such as this Serena and Lily LaJolla basket so they can even have a place for an extra blanket or throw or even dirty clothes.

Make the Guest Bathroom an Inviting Place to Be

If you are fortunate enough to have a dedicated guest bathroom, make sure that it stays clean and stocked with necessities such as toilet paper and soap. Even if you don’t have a dedicated guest bathroom, make sure the bathroom they will be using is stocked with everything they would need.

Provide Basic Toiletries

I’m sure you’ve been on a trip and you’ve realized you forgot your toothpaste, toothbrush, or razor. You don’t need to stock everything, but providing sample sizes of toothpaste, deodorant, or other toiletries in a basket on the counter or dresser can really show your guests that you cared enough to prepare for their visit.

Provide Plenty of Fresh Towels

Guests will obviously need to shower. And they will notice if you have a nice set of bath towels and hand towels to use at their disposal. Here I have the Serena and Lily Healdsburg bath towels hung on a towel bar for my guests to use. These towels made from pure Turkish cotton are so amazingly soft and luxurious! And the textured tassels on the edges of the towels adds a really nice design detail.

Don’t Forget About the Little Details

On the rolling shelf here I added extra washcloths and hand towels from the Serena and Lily Sonoma collection.  And on display I also added a sugar scrub, decorative soap and even a bath bomb for guests to use at their leisure.  It really is the little things that go a long way to making your guest feel invited and welcome in your home! And by doing so you help to ensure that they have a memorable visit!

  1. Thank you – the room is beautiful. Very relaxing and inviting. Would you be willing to share the paint colour in the bedroom? It really helps to set the mood.
