How to Stay Motivated To Stay In Shape
It’s hard to believe we are at the end of January and February is almost here! The beginning of the new year is always about resolutions and goals. While I don’t set specific resolutions (such as loose x amount of weight or exercise x times a week) I do at the very least set goals and reexamine my priorities. When it comes to life, the most important thing you can do is set priorities. If you don’t make something a priority, it will end up falling by the wayside. So as the new year arrives, make notes to yourself (and write it down!) about what you are going to do to improve your health and overall fitness. Because when you decide you want to do it, it becomes much easier to do so! Goals can be intimidating, so start with small goals and build up from that. I will say this method has definitely worked for me, as reaching a small goal every day is much easier that reaching a large goal all at once.
Be Ready for the Moment
As a busy mom and physician, it can be so hard to find the time to exercise! Often times I am running to the gym, and then heading to the grocery store or taking the kids to practice as soon as I’m done. So it really helps to wear clothes that work for the gym and beyond. When I’m not dressed up for the office, more often than not you will see me in a pair of leggings and an oversized shirt. That way I don’t have to change clothes when I get a few minutes out of the day to exercise. Exercise in a Group
In this recent post I talked about how I joined Faster Way to Fat Loss. One aspect that I really like about the program are the exercise programs that are included in your membership. There are daily videos that demonstrate exercises you can do at home. All you need are a couple of light weights (also like these) and a yoga mat. I like running when I can, but when I’m short on time these exercise videos are great. I try to do them with my daughters so all of us can stay in shape. I just find exercising to be quite boring at times, and by doing it together (with some upbeat music) exercising is actually kind of fun!
Use My Fitness Pal
I’ve said it before that, My Fitness Pal is by far my favorite app for keeping track of what I eat in a day and how much I exercise. When using it consistently you are accountable for everything you do. When I lost all my baby weight I used My Fitness Pal to make sure I ate 1200 calories/day (more if I exercised) and to keep track of my activity. I used my FitBit to make sure I achieved 10,000 steps/day (even if it just meant running around the house) .I was able to sync my Fitbit with My Fitness Pal to show what my calories in/calories out were for the day. Slowly but surely I lost 1-2 pounds a week until I reached my goal weight. And I like that My Fitness Pal shows me the ratios to carbohydrates/fat/protein. You are certainly better off eating lots of fruits and vegetables (and if it’s white don’t eat it!).
Remember the Why
Above all else, when it all boils down to it health is all you’ve got. Your body is your temple and if you don’t treat it right, you are truly doing yourself a disservice. When you take the time to eat healthy and exercise, you will feel so much better! And when you feel good about yourself, others will notice too! By setting standards for yourself, you will be a role model for your children, spouse, friends, and extended family. You have everything to gain and nothing to lose!
